Francis Stanford Massie, Sr., M.D. attended Duke University as an undergraduate and for medical school. His pediatric internship was completed at Duke University. He trained in pediatrics and allergy at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center where he was a chief resident. Dr. Massie served two years in the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton. He was recruited to VCU/MCV and from 1967-1977 he taught general pediatrics as a fulltime academician. He developed the first Board approved training program in pediatric allergy in Virginia. Twelve trainees completed the fellowship requirements and have practiced allergy in Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, Connecticut, Maine, Illinois and overseas in Thailand, Iran and the Philippines. The program is now under the direction of Drs. Anne-Marie Irani and Lawrence Schwartz and it is a National Institute of Health allergy and asthma center.
In 1977, Dr. Massie went into private practice for allergy and was part-time director of the Newport News Family Practice Clinic in allergy. He has been a clinical professor of pediatrics at MCV from 1983 to the present. He is a co-founder of the Virginia Allergy and Asthma Society and served as President twice. He has served on many hospital and academic committees.
He enjoys gardening, music, traveling and hiking with his grandchildren. Dr. Massie has two sons, Francis S. Massie, Jr., M.D., who graduated from MCV as an M.D. and is teaching internal medicine at the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. Tristan S. Massie received his Ph.D. in Biostatistics from MCV and works for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Maryland.
