     Drs.  Gelber, Call and Hark  received their specialty  allergy training at the University of Virginia and Dr. Massie had allergy training at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. Drs. Gelber, Call and Hark  trained under Dr. Thomas A.E. Platts-Mills. and Dr. Massie trained under Drs. William C. Deamer and Oscar L. Frich.

All four of your physicians are Board Certified/Eligible indicating specialty training in their fields and all see infants, children and adults.  

 
Dr. Lawrence E. Gelber received a BA in biological science at Indiana University and a BS in biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  He attended medical school at the University of Modena School of Medicine and Surgery and the Center for Technological Studies, School of Medicine.  He was a resident in pediatrics and completed a year of neonatology at the Medical Center of Delaware.  He was a research assistant in internal medicine and allergy and immunology at the University of Virginia.  He then completed a fellowship in allergy and clinical immunology at UVa.  Dr. Gelber has had numerous awards and publications and has given presentations on allergy to local medical groups and to media.  Dr. Gelber has had extensive research experience in allergy and asthma. He enjoys spending quality time with his wife Tammy and sons Matthew and Harrison, golfing and doing martial arts with his older son Matthew. 

 

Dr. Robert S. Call is from Richmond and attended Collegiate High School before going to the University of Virginia, playing football, and graduating with a BA in biology.  He stayed at UVa for medical school.  A residency in internal medicine was completed at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He was voted teacher of the year twice during his residency and was a chief resident in internal medicine.  Dr. Call pursued his allergy fellowship at the University of Virginia and was an instructor in internal medicine at UVa. He has had numerous awards and publications along with extensive research experience.  He has a special interest in food induced allergic diseases. Dr. Call is on the Richmond Academy of Medicine (RAM) Board of Trustees and is on the Community Relations Committee of RAM. He is married and has four children.  Dr. Call enjoys spending time with his wife and children.  He is also interested in fitness and nutrition.

 

Dr. William T. Hark received a BA in biology at the University of Virginia.  He then attended medical school and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.  Dr. Hark returned to the University of Virginia for his allergy and clinical immunology fellowship.  Dr. Hark did research with NASA as a part of their Space Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP).  He has done additional allergy and respiratory physiology research with a number of publications and presentations. Dr. Hark's areas of interest include food allergy, dust mite and animal sensitivity and insect sting reactions. He has given talks to local medical groups and media.  In addition to local and national medical organizations, Dr. Hark is active in community organizations such as Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is on the board of Virginia Opera.  Dr. Hark enjoys spending time with his wife, Ginny, who sings opera and teaches voice lessons. He does nature photography, tennis, travel and hiking. 

 

Dr. Francis Stanford Massie, Sr is the newest physician at Richmond Allergy and Asthma Specialists.  He attended Duke University as an undergraduate and for medical school.  A pediatric internship was completed at Duke University. He trained in pediatrics and allergy at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco where he was a chief resident.  Dr. Massie served in the US Naval hospital at Camp Pendleton, California.  He has been in private practice and associated with the Medical College of Virginia since 1967.  In addition, he was the director of the Newport News Family Practice Allergy Clinic. Dr. Massie has been a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia from 1983 to present.  He is a co-founder of the Virginia Allergy Society and has been a past president. He has served on many hospital and academic committees.  Dr. Massie enjoys gardening and music. He has two children, Tristan who has a PhD from MCV and works for the FDA, and Stanford who has an MD from MCV and teaches at the University of Alabama.

 

Dr. John B. Catlett was the founding member of Catlett Allergy Associates that became Richmond Allergy and Asthma Specialists on January 1, 2003. He retired from medical practice on July 1, 2001 and is now deceased. Drs. Gelber, Call and Hark are still benefiting from Dr. Catlett's wisdom and long experience in the field of allergy.

Your doctors are currently active members of a number of state, regional and national medical societies including The American Medical Association; American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology; American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology; Asthma and Allergy Society of Virginia; The Medical Society of Virginia; and the Richmond Academy of Medicine.
