Bedroom: Encase pillows, mattresses and box springs in dust mite-proof covers (available for sale at our office). Wash sheets, pillow cases and blankets once a week in hot water and replace wool or feathered bedding with synthetic materials.

Flooring: Remove carpeting and replace with hard wood or linoleum and use washable area rugs. If that isn’t an option, vacuum weekly with a vacuum cleaner that has a small-particle or high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.

Clutter: Remove knickknacks, ornaments and tabletop books that collect dust. Store children’s games, stuffed animals and toys in plastic bins.

Pets: We understand pets are sometimes a member of the family and if you can’t relocate your animal, keep them out of the bedroom. Bathing them once a week may also help reduce the allergen in the dander they shed.

Bathroom: Use an exhaust fan to reduce moisture while bathing. Towel-dry the tub and enclosure after each use.
